Today I learned how to create a blog. I learned how to edit and add things to it too! This was all new to me...I've never done anything like this before so I had to mess around with things to learn how they work.
September 6, 2007...
Today in class we did an outside activity. We wrote down the different types of health which were Physical, Mental, Social, Emotional and Spiritual. Then we went outside and after every activity we wrote down different ways we could associate the different types of health into the things we did. I found most of my associations were physical and I didn't really find anything that was spiritual. We also took some notes today too. We wrote down some different definitions of what we thought health might be and then shared with the class...we came up with:
-Health is to treat your body right
-Health is the mental, physical and emotional aspects of life
-Health is the general wellness of the mind and body
-Health is physical well-being
Then we started taking notes on a video but the bell rang...all fruits and veggies except organics need a good scrub before use.
September 10, 2007...
Today we...I don't remember most of it actually...I remember we watched the rest of that video. Form that I learned:
-You should wash apples before using, you can use the peel and you should remove the seeds because they contain small amounts of cyanide.
-You should also scrub carrots, you can keep the peel of this too, and the greens may be toxic so you should remove them.
-You do not have to scrub citrus however, you do have to peel it because the peel is bitter and toxic, you may leave the seeds.
-You should retain as much white rind as possible because it's rich in bioflavoniods
-You do not have to peel celery but you do have to scrub it, and retain the leaves.
We also looked at different types and brands of juicers and what the differences are. A titanium blade is better than just a stainless steel one because it's more durable.
September 12, 2007...
So today we started off talking about how people aren't getting their work done on time and are falling behind. We looked at some other people's blogs that had everything done and up to date to see how ours should look. After that everyone learned how to make a del.icio.us account and I made one.
September 14, 2007...
In class we went over the pyramid plan and we compared different peoples outcomes. After that we were told not to post anything on our bogs that could be offensive to certain people. We went over the homework and then we got our groups. I'm in group #2 with Kris and Jamie. Our project is on Veggies and is due September 20, 2007.

In today's class some people presented their vitamin, fruit and veggie projects. I wasn't there for the beginning of class due to my senior guidance appointment though. The only presentation I was able to see was Kiya's and then I presented mine. I learned that Royal jelly is jelly made by bees to indicate which bee is the queen. Her vitamin was B-5 and it relieves stress. I also learned that it dissolves in water. Too much of this vitamin can cause diarrhea and water retention. This vitamin can be found in beef, fresh veggies, egg, mushrooms and more...
September 21, 2007
So today we went into the computer lab so everyone could catch up on their blogs. Which was a good idea because a lot of people were behind! Everyone was pretty much doing there own thing so I don't have much to say about today's class. I got caught up and got everything figured out...that was about it.

Today we had a guest speaker in class. His name is Ricky, most of us have seen him before. The family and consumer science class joined us for the presentation. Today Ricky was presenting information on STIs and he talked a little about HPV. We went over 7 different STIs. They were Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HIV/AIDS, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts and Pubic Lice/Crabs. We talked about what each one was, how you get it, the symptoms, how you know for sure, how it's treated and what can happen if you don't take care of it.
September 27, 2007
Ricky came into class again today. This time he talked to us about contraceptives (a.k.a. birth control). There were 11 different types of birth control and then he told us about Plan B. There's the Male Condom, Female Condom, Spermicide (cream, jell or foam), the Implanon, the Depo- Shot, the Pill, Progestin-Only Pills, the Patch, the Nuvaring, IUD. Ricky told us the percent of effectiveness for each method, how to use it, the advantages and side effects.

Today Sarah, Jamie, Molly, Taylor and CJ presented their vitamin projects. Sarah did Vitamin B1. There is very little of this vitamin stored in the body and if you inject it into some one's body who has beriberi (which is lack of Thiamine) then it will get them right back onto their feet within hours. It helps your blood formation and repels insects. Females are recommended to have 1mg per day and Males should have 1.4mg per day. Jamie's vitamin was B3 which is found in liver, heart, kidney, chicken, eggs, milk, tomatoes and broccoli. Children should get from 2-12mg per day, women should get about 14mg per day and men should get about 16mg per day. Molly's vitamin was Vitamin D which helps increase low calcium levels or prevent it. If this vitamin is over used then it can hurt an unborn child and you should never crush this pill before taking it. Taylor's vitamin was vitamin E. When it's sent to the liver and kidney it acts as a hormone and messages the intestines to increase absorption of calcium. Its created when exposed to the sun or eating certain foods. CJ had vitamin H which helps with healthy hair, sweat glands and muscle pain. This vitamin is found in Cheese, Liver, Eggs, Chicken breast, Mushrooms, Salmon and Spinach.

Today we had a really long conversation/debate on health insurance. Weather it should be up to the individual to have insurance or the government. I think it should be up to the individual because in order for others to help you, you have to help yourself first.
October 5, 2007
I wasnt in class but there was a substitute and everyone who was there watched a movie.
October 9, 2007
We got our tobacco projects today and then went to the computer lab to get started on them. Thats about it...
October 11, 2007
Today we learned some facts about testicular cancer. In the year 2000 there were 2000 cases of testicular cancer. In the year 2005 there were 9000 cases of testicular cancer, which means that 1-2% of cancers are teticular. They arent sure what causes it yet. Testicular cancer doesnt get more common as you get older, it is most common in white caucasion men from ages 16-45. I also learned that alcohol slows down your heart rate and reduces your risk of having a heart attack. This is only true when you drink like a glass of wine with dinner once in a while or something...however, this isnt true when you get wasted every weekend.
October 15, 2007
Today we talked Testicular Cancer. We talked about how its not usually painful and a lot of times theres just lumps and/or swelling.
October 23, 2007
In class we played black jack with health cards that had tobacco facts on them. If you lost then you had to write the facts that were on the card left in your hand down. Whoever had the most wins in each group got to keep the deck of cards.
October 25, 2007
Today in class we talked about our final exam. Instead of taking a test we're going to be put into groups and we're going to play jeopardy. After we talked about that Molly and Gabe presented their tobacco projects.
October 29, 2007
We started off todya with Molly doing her juicing project. She made fruit punch which had apples, orange and strawberries. After the juice there were more tobacco presentations.
October 31, 2007
I was not in class today but Taylor did his juicing project whcih had oranges and grapes in it. Then the class looked at slides that had to do with the effects tobacco has on your body. Tey copared pictures of a healthy body to that of a smoker and saw how bad smoking really is for you.
